About Lake Whatcom

Lake Whatcom is the largest lake in Whatcom County, just north of the Seattle real estate market, and is just over 14 miles long. It is the 4th largest lake in Washington State. Approximately 60,000 Whatcom County residents actually get their drinking water from this lake, as well as using it as one of the greatest recreational destinations around. The lake was originally carved out by a massive glacier over a mile thick, and was then filled with rain, glacial melt, and mountain stream water. It is now one of the most highly-sought after residential areas. The homes along Lake Whatcom enjoy the privacy of a lakefront area not totally over-developed, while still enjoying the convenience of being 5 minutes away from downtown Bellingham. There are several parks along its beaches where residents from all over Bellingham can take advantage of Lake Whatcom’s cool waters. There are several boat launches where you can lower in your power boat, sea doo or sailboat, and spend the day waterskiing or putting around the lake and lounging in the sun. Lake Whatcom is surrounded by evergreen forests, which offer residents fantastic hiking and mountain biking trails. The lake is very long and skinny, and so there is a huge amount of beachfront for potential home-buyers.

Living on a freshwater lake is a treat, and Lake Whatcom is no exception. It’s deep, cool waters offer a huge variety of activities, and fishing is even allowed. The shoreline curves, so its waterside residents enjoy a privacy not available on a rounder lake. With Canadian neighbors just to the north, and big cities like Seattle just to the south, residents of Lake Whatcom enjoy a smaller, community feel on the water while still staying within a stone’s throw to big-city life. There is nothing more refreshing than cooling off in its clear waters, and nothing more beautiful than watching the sun melt the morning mist off the top of the lake. Residents of Lake Whatcom know all this, and visitors of this area never regret it.
